Exterior Window Screens: How to Measure

Measuring Basics:
Measurements are normally stated in “Width” and then “Height”.
Measure to the nearest 1/16 inch.
Measure near the corners as sometimes the middle may be inaccurate. Note any springs, clips or other hardware and their locations.

Types of Screens:
Single Hung Half Window Screens typically only cover the bottom half of the window. In many cases, they may have leaf springs located on the top, with lift tabs on the bottom.

Single Hung Windows only open from the bottom up and are typically made of aluminum or vinyl. These type window screens normally install in tracks located at top and bottom on the outside of the window.

Horizontal “Slider” Half Window Screens typically only cover the left half of the window looking from the outside. In many cases, they may have leaf springs located on the side with lift tabs on the opposite side.

Horizontal “Slider” Windows open by sliding the window left to right and are typically made of aluminum or vinyl. These window screens normally install in tracks located on the left and right sides on the outside of the window.

Measure Window Screens ‘Width’
(for windows with screen channel)

Put the end of a metal measuring tape from left to right and hold it as straight as possible. Place measuring top left side of window screen opening.
*Measure window screens to the right side and subtract about 1/8″.
*Provide measurements to the nearest 1/8″.
*This measurement is your window screen ‘Width’.

Measure Window Screens ‘Height’
(for windows with screen channel)

First, check for a channel at the top (under the window sash). This is where the top of the screen with will slip up into. Now, check for a lip at the bottom of the window straight below the top U-Channel. You should find the lip may be only 1/16″” to 3/16″ deep. This is what the bottom of the screen will slip behind to hold it in place.
Put the end of a metal measuring tape all the way into the Top U-Channel and hold it as straight down as possible. Make sure the measuring tape is all the way up into into the Top U-Channel.
You should measure to 1/16″-1/8″ above of the top edge of the bottom lip. Provide measurements to the nearest 1/8″.
This measurement is your window screen ‘Height’.

Measuring Solar Screens with Colonial Grids

If the home has windows that face the street with the colonial style grid pattern, you will want to offer that same pattern on the exterior solar screen. Measure Window Screens overall screen size as you would for screens without the grid pattern depending on the type on installation you have chosen. Measuring the inside grid pattern is done by measuring left to right and bottom up from the outside edge of the screen to the center of each mutton/grid bar.

Measuring Solar Screens with Specials and Arches

Arches and special shapes will typically be installed with screws, brick clips, or Velcro. Measure the screen the same as you would a standard square screen but be sure to note the center height, and side leg measurements. For Octagons and odd shapes without curves, be sure to measure all outside dimensions plus overall width and height. For ovals and odd shapes with curves patterns may be requested.

BASIC EXTERIOR SOLAR SCREEN MEASURING INFORMATION

Size given is always as exact overall dimension of screen

Measuring Exterior Solar Screens When Window has Full Screen Tracks

Exterior solar screens normally cover the entire window to attain maximum insulating benefits. You will measure the same way as you would for a ½ screen but use the channel at the very top of the window, or on the sides if measuring a horizontal slider.

Measuring the exterior solar screen ‘Width’
(for windows with screen channel)

Put the end of a metal measuring tape from left to right and hold it as straight as possible. Place measuring top left side of window screen opening.
*Measure to the right side and subtract about 1/8″.
*Provide measurements to the nearest 1/8″.
*This measurement is your window screen ‘Width’.

Measuring the exterior solar screen ‘Height’

First, check for a channel at the top (under the window sash). This is where the top of the screen with will slip up into.
Now, check for a lip at the bottom of the window straight below the top U-Channel. You should find the lip may be only 1/16″” to 3/16″ deep. This is what the bottom of the screen will slip behind to hold it in place.
Put the end of a metal measuring tape all the way into the Top U-Channel and hold it as straight down as possible. Make sure the measuring tape is all the way up into the Top U-Channel.
You should measure to 1/16″-1/8″ above of the top edge of the bottom lip. Provide measurements to the nearest 1/8″.
This measurement is your window screen ‘Height’.

IMPORTANT: When you insert the solar screen up in the deep top channel, it has to be short enough to clear the top edge of the bottom lip, then the springs push the screen down into place behind the lip.

Installing your full size exterior solar screens

First, insert the top of the solar screen with the springs into the deep top U-Channel enough to compress the springs. Then slip the bottom of the solar screen behind the bottom lip. The springs should push the screen down to hold it in place.

Measuring Exterior Solar Screens When Screwing onto Window Frame

Check the Window for Screw Locations First
First check to see if you can put screws into the window frame without hitting glass. You normally put 4 screws, two on each side at about 6″ to 8″ from the top and bottom. Your screw positions could vary and be on top and bottom instead of the sides.

Measuring the Solar Screens “Width”

Put the end of a metal measuring tape from left to right and hold it as straight as possible. Measure ‘almost’ brick-to-brick or edge of window frame but leaving 1/8 space to clear the brick or other surrounding material.

Place measuring tape to left side of window frame.
Measure to the right side and subtract about 1/8″ for clearance.
Do not measure the tolerance too tight to allow easy insertion and removal. Provide measurements to the nearest 1/8″.
This measurement is your solar screen ‘Width’.

Measuring the Solar Screens “Height”

Put the end of a metal measuring tape at the top of where it will lay and hold it as straight down as possible. Find where your screen should lay at the top and bottom.
You may want to allow about 1/8″ less to get the screen in the opening. Provide measurements to the nearest 1/8″.
This measurement is your solar screen ‘Height’.

Measuring Exterior Solar Screens When using Dual Lock Velcro

Screens Dual Lock Velcro Attached to Window Frame

Check the Window for Screw Locations First
First check to see if you can put screws into the window frame without hitting glass. You normally put 4 strips of Velcro, two on each side at about 6″ to 8″ from the top and bottom.
Your Velcro positions could vary and be on top and bottom instead of the sides.

Measuring the Solar Screens “Width”

This measurement is your solar screen ‘Height’.

Measuring Exterior Solar Screens When using Brick Clips

Measuring and Installing exterior solar screens with brick clips is so simple anyone can do It Easy to Measure – Exact Sizing Not as Critical as Other Methods
No Drilling or Screws Required – Brick Grips hold to the Side of Bricks Easy to Install and Remove – No Tools Required
Brick Grips Do Not Come Permanently Attached to the Solar Screen Frame They Can Positioned as Desired During Installation for Best Fit

Measure Solar Screen “Width” for Brick Grips

Measure your opening brick to brick left to right. Subtract about 3/8 inch and order the solar screen width.

Measure Solar Screen “Height” for Brick Grips

Measure you opening brick to brick bottom to top of opening Subtract 3/8 inch’ and order the solar screen height.

How to Install Solar Screens with Brick Grips

Slide brick grips into place at corners or crossbar or as needed. Push solar screen into place against window.
